UD Challenge In My Environment

My Kitchen Cabinet is Too High!!! :(

This is a picture of my kitchen cabinet. I am reminded daily of the lack of universal design that was considered when this cabinet was constructed! I am 5'7'' and I could not even attempt to reach the items on the top shelf (boxed in red) in my cabinet! My boyfriend is 6'5'', so if I want something that is stored on that top shelf, I need to ask him to get it down for me, or I need a step ladder. The truth is that it is very cumbersome to go and get a step ladder every time I want something from up there, and most of the time my boyfriend is not home to help me! Therefore, the items up there are unreachable.

The real truth is, because of the lack of universal design in my kitchen cabinet, I spent one saturday reorganizing my cabinet. I placed items that I almost never use up there, so I wouldn't be burdened by needing to get things down. I'm really not sure what is up there at the moment, I obviously don't have much use of them! Who ever built this kitchen did not have short people in mind. I can't even imagine someone with a physical disability, who lives a lone and who could not climb a step ladder, being able to utilize this cabinet space! It's definitely inconvenient!

  1. This is a common challenge in many apts. How can one maximize the space of their homes without alienating those with the limitations you note? Curious to see what solution(s) you come up with.

I suggest you also identify which principle(s) of UD are being violated when considering your challenge. Will help in putting things in perspective, as well as help in your design.

  2. Daniela, we have the exact same problem!! I think most NYC apartments have this problem, which is funny to me, because I don't think New Yorkers are a particularly tall breed.

It's a tough problem to solve without completely remodeling the kitchen, but I think there could be some creative solutions. I am considering a solution in which you take out the shelves inside the cabinet and install some thing that allows items to hang down from the top of the inside of the cabinet. Maybe something like that could work?

  3. When I was younger and more nimble, I would climb up onto the counters to reach the cabinet shelves. I don't do this quite often anymore, but sometimes, when I feel too lazy to get a chair...

Perhaps you can find a space for a small stool in one of the lower cabinets in that area? I use one that's been made for kids - it's small and folds flat, so hey, why not?
