I constantly wonder where I would be without technology. We
actually had this discussion in our psychology class. Is it good that our
generation and younger are born into a technological age. Computers, iPads,
smart phones and more surround us. We talk about how technology is a form of accommodation
as well as making modifications possible. When I think of technology as making things
easier (when it works). I type twice as fast as I write, and I can’t live
without spell check. However, I do think about my students who have horrible
spelling and wonder if it’s attributed to spell check.
Technology is flexible and changeable, it’s “quick and easy.”
Writing can be edited and reedited, which makes our lives easier. Especially in
NYC, “Time is money.” There can be arguments that we are too reliant on
technology, and that I can agree with. When Hurricane Sandy knocked out our
power, it seemed unbearable!
However, especially working with children with Autism, and
seeing all the possibilities that technology presents, I know how lucky we are
to live in this generation. These children have voices because of technology!
Students are engaged because of SMARTboards, and can express themselves through
multi-modes. “Technology is power.” Sometimes a movie on my iPhone is the only
reward that my students will work for. It is a teaching tool, and a reward all
in the palm of my hand. The numerous educational games and apps have changed
education and technology forever. The two are no longer separate; technology is
important in education!
